Store Video Files in Google Drive

Using storage space on Google Drive, instructors can upload and store video files related to their courses or work at TMU. The may be a preferable option for instructors who have experienced issues uploading large video files to Brightspace D2L for use in their courses

Please note that instructors have a maximum Google Drive storage limit of 1 TB and this storage limit is shared across Google Workspace apps, such as Gmail, Calendar, etc. As video files can be quite large and count towards your total storage usage, please work to avoid consuming large amounts of storage with personal video files unrelated to teaching, SRC and other TMU-related work.

Benefits

Using Google Drive to store and share your video files offers a number of benefits:

  • Google transcodes video files for in-browser playback. Googles own video player enables you to watch videos from directly within Google Drive without a need to download them first. If you share a video file with your class, or store a video in an existing shared class folder, your students can watch the video directly from Google Drive.
  • If youd like to reference or link to a video thats stored in your Google Drive connected to your D2L course shell, as long as youve set up the videos sharing permissions correctly, your students will be able to access it via the link. You can also copy and paste this link into your D2L course shell (this also applies to any files stored on Google Drive).  Access instructions for embedding video files stored in Google Drive into your D2L course shell.
  • Google Drive allows you to store many different video file formats, including:
    • .WEBM
    • .MPEG4
    • .3GPP
    • .MOV
    • .AVI
    • .WMV
    • .FLV
    • .OGG
    • .MPEG
    • .MTS
    • .MKV
  • You can add captions to your videos in Google Drive. For instructions on how to do this, please .

How to Facilitate Class-wide Video Sharing

By storing videos in Google Drive, instructors are able to provide access to videos for all students in their class. By uploading videos to Google Drive, instructors can set their desired level of video privacy, including the ability to prevent comments or viewers from downloading your video. Please note that it is up to the instructor to facilitate video sharing for their class.

Instructions for setting up class-wide video sharing

  1. Set up a shared folder for the class.
  2. Provide students editor permissions so they are folder collaborators with uploading permission.
  3. Use it as a space for students to upload, or drag and drop their video into the folder. Since the Google Drive folder is shared with the class already, all students will have access to any file located in the shared folder.
  4. Please review some warnings and precautions about using shared Google Drive folders
  5. In their own TMU Google Drive, students will first have to upload their video file before adding it to the class folder. Click New > File upload.
Choose "File upload"

Students will need to share the video file with their instructor for assignment submission purposes.

  1. Instruct your students to share their own video with the course Google Group (depending on the permissions set for the Google Group).
  2. Give the group the ability to view the video and make sure to unselect the Share with people settings options in order to restrict downloading and prevent others from sharing the file further.
