TMU student, staff & faculty immigration information

At ³Ô¹ÏÖ±²¥, International Student Support (ISS) is the indicated office to provide Canadian immigration information to current and incoming international students. Our International Student Advisors, who make up our Immigration & Advising team, consist of Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultants (RCIC) and Regulated Canadian International Student Immigration Advisors (RISIA) who are licensed through the .  

The Immigration and Advising team’s objective is to demystify the intersection of immigration processes and policies and those of the institution. When advising international students, we seek to: 

  • Understand each student’s circumstances
  • Outline options available to the student (where possible)
  • Explain the implications of the option(s) available to them
  • Empower the student to make an informed decision
  • Guide the student to on and off campus resources to seek additional information or support

Our team of RCICs and RISIAs is able to:

  • Provide general information about Canadian immigration programs and policies
  • Advise international students on their enrolment status, including part-time studies and taking time off studies, and how this impacts their immigration status in Canada
  • Meet with students in one-on-one and small group settings to discuss common immigration applications for international students, such as study permit extensions, temporary resident visas, etc.
  • Issue enrolment and confirmation of completion of studies letters for immigration purposes, such as Study Permit Extension and Post Graduation Work Permit applications

Our licensed Immigration & Advising team is not able to:

  • Represent students in immigration matters
  • Fill out immigration or tax forms on a a student’s behalf
  • Submit applications to IRCC
  • Contact IRCC on a student’s behalf or influence IRCC’s decision-making
  • Advise on resolving complex immigration issues, including inadmissibility 
  • Provide legal strategy

IRPA 91

In accordance with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) section 91, please note that university employees cannot advise students about immigration options, help them complete immigration forms, or communicate with immigration officials on their behalf if they are not licensed. Advising a student on their immigration options can be considered unauthorized practice if the individual is not an immigration consultant in good standing with CICC, a lawyer or notaries who is a member of a or a paralegal (Ontario only) who is a member of the . The penalty associated with the offence of representing or advising a person ranges from fines (up to $100,000) to imprisonment (up to two years).
